Insomnia......No More Pill

Insomnia is defined as difficulty to fall asleep, and there are a lot of factors why people gets insomnia. I have researched some factors and the most common is too much running thoughts during the night due to anxiety, depression, and sometimes excitement. Depression is very common because of physical changes that happen during removal of breast for those suffering from breast cancer for example, or due to amputation of a leg because of diabetes. For teen agers, they usually worry about their grades, activities at school, things they wanted to have like new cell phones or Ipods, worries about being grounded for a week or two, problems with their parents especially those teens who badly needs attention and affection and those who have lost their parents or their significant others, sometimes about teen love and crushes, and so on. Kids worry about stuffs most of the time, and they usually have too much excitement for things they so wanted to come and can’t even wait for the sun to rise which pressures the brain that leads to difficulty to fall asleep. In adults, heart breaks are the most common. They are usually depressed because of disappointments to their partners and sometimes problems at work, and as mentioned above, physical changes is also a factor.

The most common cause of insomnia is due to the emotional status of an individual that leads to extreme running of thoughts which sometimes last 3-4 days. Pill is the only remedy most of the time, but the question is,” Do victims need to take a pill to get rid of insomnia?” My best friend once told me about a song written by a Filipino musician and composer Jose Marie Chan, there he wrote” I’ll sleep tonight counting my blessings instead of counting sheep”. Then it gave me an idea. Sheep here represents your depressions, anxiety, failures, pressures and all the negative thoughts that have been stored in your mind. You know why shepherds count their sheep at the end of the day? It’s because they are worried that they might have lost one or few. That’s what we all are, we are always worried about many things, we usually see things we have lost and things we haven’t had, and that defines pressure. When we have unstable emotional status because of some other reasons, we usually find it hard to get to sleep because we keep on thinking about those heartbreaking parts of our lives and we really just can’t stop ourselves from doing it over and over and over again even though it torn us apart. Have you even noticed that we never get tired with those running thoughts in our heads? Those are the sheep we keep on counting, and the sheep we’re afraid to loose. It’s like we’re broken hearted counting broken hearts. If one keeps on doing so, one could really have a hard time falling asleep.

Blessings are present everyday that even a pre-schooler can recognize them (so I don’t have to write examples of it). Try counting your blessings during the night while trying to fall asleep, you’ll notice having a light head and a normal heart beat compared to counting pressures (sheep) which makes the brain heavy, heart beats faster and  that you can’t even relax.  Try counting your blessing and you will see your self smiling without even noticing it.

While having those nice thoughts in your head, here are also some tips to enhance a light heart while trying to fall asleep:
You can listen to slow songs since music plays a good role in relaxing ones mind, and since you still need to put your music off before completely falling asleep to prevent your device to be broken off or any accidents, you can use a stereo with a time setting device that shots off all by itself depending on the number of hours you wished the music to be playing.

You can also place a bunch of fresh flowers on your side table to give floral fresh aroma in all four corners of your bedroom. This fragrance will give relaxation and comfort while having your rest.

Another nice idea is changing the color of your room. I suggest dark colored paint because as you have observed, light-colored rooms stresses the eye while trying to get to sleep so we tend to put the light off. Some uses a piece of eye shade just to get rid of light.

Another one is to try changing your room setting. If the setting is not pleasing in the eye then that would cause to having more pressure in your brain. Who would want to live inside a displeasing room and have a rest there? It is then based on your own creativity now on how you are going to change your room setting. And in your bed, you can also add more pillows for more comfort.

Difficulty sleeping? Follow those tips while counting your blessings instead of sheep.
